Jermaine Dupri Mauldin was born on 23 September 1972, in Asheville, North Carolina, United States. His father Michael Mauldin was a Columbia Records executive and his mother Tina (Mosley) Mauldin was a house maker.

Dupri became interested in hip hop music when he was only ten years old. As his father was also an Atlanta talent manager, Dupri got the chance to perform at the stage of Diana Ross show and danced with him.

At the age of twelve, he started performing in shows and events around the country. He also appeared in the music video of the song Freaks Come Out at Night. 

Career

In 1991, Dupri formed a teen duo “Kris Kross” with Chris Kelly and Chris Smith. They released their first album Totally Krossed Out that went multi-platinum because of the singles written by Dupri Jump and Warm It Up.

Shortly after, he established his own record label, “So So Def”. In 1993, he released the debut album of his record label Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha with female R&B group Xscape.

The album was a huge success and certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Singles from the album Understanding, Just Kickin’ It, and Love on My Mind reached at the top positions in the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 1994, he signed Da Brat to his record label and released her first studio album Funkdafied which became a commercial success and went platinum. He also collaborated with Mariah Carey for the song “Always By My Baby” which was a number one hit single.

Later on, Dupri contributed to several super hit music tracks that include My Way, You Make Me Wanna, The Boy is Mine, The First Night, Sweetheart, Money Ain’t a Thang (feat. Jay-Z), Get Gone, Confessions, We Belong Together, and, Let Me Hold You.

He has won numerous popular awards and nominations throughout his career including a Grammy Award. Dupri has worked with several popular musicians such as Usher, Ludacris, Alicia Keys, Monica, Nelly, Janet Jackson, and Bow Wow.
