John William Ferrell was born on July 16, 1967, in Irvine, California. His mother Betty Kay was a teacher who used teach at Old Mill School and Santa Ana College and his father Roy Lee Ferrell Jr. He has a younger brother named Patrick.

Ferrell attended Rancho San Joaquin Middle School for his primary education and later he joined University High School in Irvine. He was a good sportsperson in his school life, Ferrell was the captain of his school football team and also on the Soccer team.

In his school time, Ferrel used to make his friends laugh through his comedy acts. When he was in high school Ferrell and his friend decided to perform a comedy skits. They write their own content and successfully performed the act and Ferrell won the Best Personality title for that act.
