Robert Sylvester Kelly was born on 8th January 1967, in Hyde Park, Chicago. His mother Joanne Kelly was a professional singer who raised him alone. He has three siblings (i.e. an older brother and sister, and a younger brother).

Kelly grew up in the neighborhood of Bronzeville, Chicago. As a child, Kelly loved to play basketball, football, and other outdoor games.

He attended Kenwood Academy in Chicago where he was a part of the university’s basketball team. In the academy, his music teacher, Dr. Lena McLin discovered the amazing voice of Kelly and encouraged him to pursue a musical career.

Career

Kelly started his career in 1989 with a talent tv show Big Break and won the grand prize of $100 thousand. In 1992, he released his first studio album Born into the 90’s which was fairly successful. And gained him the attention of the audience.

Kelly released his first solo album in 1993, 12 Play the album became his first number one hit album. Following the first solo album, Kelly released another album Bump N’ Grind which spent over three months at the number one position on Billboard R&B Singles.

His other two hit singles Your Body’s Callin and Sex Me reached at number #2 and #8 position on Billboard R&B Singles respectively. Both the singles sold over 1 million copies alone in the United States and later certified Gold by the RIAA.

Later, he released several hit albums and chart-buster singles which include Gotham City, If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time, The World’s Greatest, I’m a Flirt, I Believe I Can Fly, and  Ignition. 

Kelly has sold over 75 million records worldwide which makes him one of the best-selling and most successful R&B male artists of the 1990s.

He has won numerous prestigious awards and nominations including three Grammy Awards, one BET Award, and two American Music Awards.
