Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. was born on October 20, 1971, in Long Beach, California to Vernall Varnado and Beverly Broadus. Snoop was named after his stepfather, Calvin Cordozar Broadus Sr. His parents nicknamed him Snoopy because he used to love cartoon character from Peanuts in his childhood.

At the age of 5, he started singing and playing the piano at a Church. Snoop struggled too much after his parents’ divorce.  As a child, he sold candy, delivered the newspaper and bagged groceries to help his mother.
