Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr. was born on August 14, 1959, in Lansing, Michigan. His father Earvin Johnson Sr. is a General Motors assembly worker and his mother Christine Johnson a School janitor. They are six brothers and sisters from which three half-siblings by his father’s previous marriage.

Johnson inspired to play basketball as a youngster by his favourite player Bill Russell. He also idolized players such as Marques Haynes and Earl Monroe and used to practice basketball all-day, his father also played high school basketball in his home state.

When he was in eighth grade, he decided to pursue his career in basketball. Johnson had become a dominant junior player, once scoring 48 points in a game. At the age of 15, Johnson playing for Everett High School made a record of triple-double of 36 points, 18 rebounds and 16 assists.

He also took his team to an Overtime victory in the state championship game. Johnson completed his high school studies with two All-state selections and also considered as the best high school player ever. People used to call him “Magic” after watching his game.

Career

Johnson received many offers from several top-ranked colleges because of his game. But he decided to play in his home town and joined Michigan State in East Lansing. In 1979, Michigan State qualified for the  NCAA Tournament and faced Indiana State which considered as one of the best team at that time.

But, Michigan State defeated Indiana State and Johnson awarded as Most Outstanding Player. And also got the chance to play for the All-American team for his performance in that match. It was the most-watched college basketball game ever.

He got a big opportunity in 1979 when he was selected to play in the 1979 NBA draft by the Lakers. He won a championship and an awarded as NBA Finals Most Valuable Player. That season he won four more championships with the Lakers.

Johnson retired in 1991 after announcing that he had contracted HIV, but he returned to play in the 1992 All-Star Game and won the MVP Award. At the age of 36, Johnson announced his final retirement.

In his career, he won three NBA MVP Award, nine NBA Finals appearances, five NBA Championship, twelve All-Star games, ten All-NBA First and Second team nominations. He was a member of the United States men’s Olympic basketball team “The Dream Team” which won the Olympic gold medal in 1992.
