Akon Thiam was born on 16 April 1973, in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. His mother Kin Gueye Thiam is a dancer or dance teacher and father Mor Thiam was a percussionist.

At the age of seven, Akon moved to Union City, New Jersey where he learned to play musical instruments such as drums and guitar.

He attended William L. Dickinson High School in Jersey City. And later his family again moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he completed the rest of his studies.

Akon started his official music career in 2004 when he released his solo album Trouble. That album was a commercial success the album’s single Locked Up reached number #8 position in the United States and number #5 in the UK.

With the album Trouble, Akon rose his fame in the music industry. In 2005, he released a single Lonely which peaked at the top 5 positions on Billboard Hot 100 chart. That same year Akon appeared on two other singles i.e. P-Money’s Keep On Callin and Savages’ Moonshine.

And a year later, he made a guest appearance on Young Jeezy‘s album Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101. In 2006, he launched his own record label Kon Live Distribution under Interscope Records and also released his second album Konvicted.

Konvicted peaked at number two position on the Billboard 200 album chart and sold over 300K copies in its first week. Akon gained a huge fanbase and popularity with this album.  That album later certified triple platinum by RIAA.

The album’s second single I Wanna Love You (featuring Snoop Dogg) reached at number #1 position on Billboard Hot 100 chart and became Akon’s first number-one single. By following the album’s success Akon launched a clothing line, “Kovicted Clothing” in 2007.

After that, he released several chart-topping singles and hit albums. Some of his hit tracks include Mama Africa, Don’t Matter, Sorry, Blame It on Me, Wanna Be Startin Somethin, Freedom, I’m So Paid (featuring Lil Wayne), We Don’t Care, and Beautiful.

He has won numerous prestigious accolades throughout his career including five World Music Award, a Billboard Award, one American Music Award, and a Guinness World Record as the number one selling artist for masters of ringtones in the world.
